Website Freshness

When thinking about search engine optimisation Website Freshness is one aspect that you should not overlook.

Google (and the other search engines) love websites that regularly have new and fresh content added to them, pages that are updated over time and have regular, new content added to them are very attractive to search engines as they show that they are being managed – providing regular, fresh content to visitors. Website freshness can really work provided you deal with the frequency of updates carefully.

However it is important that the website freshness technique is done very carefully as there are some pages on your website that should never really change and there are other  pages that should only have small changes made to them on an occasional basis.

Your home page should not really change unless you have new services or products to offer to your visitors, maybe you have a small news section on it that will change frequently, or perhaps you have things like special offers displayed, if you update other areas on your home page too often then this may cost you in your listing or could cause you to lose some of your main and valuable keywords.

Your other pages like About Us, Contact Us, Terms and conditions should also only be updated for good reason.

Information pages, product pages, news pages, special offer pages etc, should always be updated on a regular basis.

Depending on the page in question, updates should be once a week or once a month – if you make them too frequent then you may have problems with Google looking at the updates as possible spammy comments that may also cause you to lose popularity.  Small updates on a slow, trickle type basis are better than adding a shed load of new content all in one go.

If you get website freshness right with small, frequent updates then this will lead to frequent spidering from the various search engines which in turn will result in greater levels of search engine results, better positioning and ultimately more traffic to your website!
